Attracted by its charm, Fermin Muguruza went to The Big Easy to record “Irun Meets New Orleans”, where he adapted to the sounds of New Orleans eight songs from his career, interpreted two of the city’s classics, and made a documentary, Nola? about the situation ten years on from hurricane Katrina. All filmed with the crème de la crème of the local scene: from the historical Preservation Hall Jazz Band to bounce rapper Katey Red, with collaborators from Galactic, Dr. John and Trombone Shorty.
Fermin Muguruza New Orleans Basque Orkestra live shows 2016
Last year, celebrating the 30th anniversary of the publication of the first album of Kortatu, Fermin Muguruza decided to travel to New Orleans. Attracted by its musical enchantment and conscious of that 10 years after Katrina the city had come to symbolize rebellion and a sense of community, he decided to make the documentary “NOLA?” and the album “Irun Meets New Orleans” the soundtrack of the documentary in which the songs are related to the songs with which the protagonists talk about, converting itself in that way in another person in the narration.
The songs chosen by Muguruza cover his extensive musical career; 2 songs by Kortatu, 2 from Negu Gorriak, 2 from his production as a soloist, 2 songs recorded in the past years that havent been published and 2 classic songs from the most important city of Louisiana.
After the publication of this work, and with the invitation of the Santa Monica Cultural Arts Centre of Barcelona made to Fermin Muguruza for a 3 week residency to present his exhibition BLACK IS BELTZA which will be shown at the centre (June 21st to the 31st of July), Muguruza decided to set up a centre of operations at the centre at which from June 21st to July 31st he will realize different parallel activities and he will invite some of the musicians from New Orleans who participated in the recording of the album together with musicians who normally play with him and will form the NEW ORLEANS BASQUE ORKESTRA.
The orchestra composed of 12 musicians will play 5 concerts in which they will interpret the songs registered on the last album of Muguruza: “NOLA? IRUN MEETS NEW ORLEANS” and other songs by the contrabandist of ideas always persistent in his struggle against injustice, his celebration of life, for peoples freedom and against the censorship of thought.
