A total of 19 titles –15 features, one medium-length film, one short and two series– make up the Basque participation in the 71st edition of the San Sebastian Festival, distributed between the Official Selection, Donostia Award Special Screenings, Zabaltegi-Tabakalera, Made in Spain, Zinemira, Velodrome and the Basque Cinema, EiTB and RTVE Galas.
Zinemira, the section specifically dedicated to Basque cinema, is organised by the San Sebastian Festival and the Basque Government Department of Culture. It is sponsored by Irizar and EiTB and has the collaboration of the Basque Film Archive, the EPE/APV and IBAIA producers associations, and Zineuskadi. This year, Urbil also joins as a collaborator. At this edition, Zinemira comes with nine fictions and non-fictions. Three of these, to have their world premiere at the Festival, will compete for the Irizar Basque Film Award together with another two works present in other Festival sections. A total of five productions will therefore compete for the prize money of 20,000 euros going to the film’s producer or producers.
The dramatic odyssey of migrants on their way to Europe is at the centre of Bidasoa 2018-2023, the latest documentary work from Fermin Muguruza (Irun, 1963). The filmmaker and musician from Gipuzkoa has shown his work in several of the Festival sections: Zabaltegi (Zuloak, 2012), Zinemira (Black is beltza, 2018) and the Velodrome (Black is beltza II: Ainhoa, 2022).
Another Zinemira regular is the moviemaker Josu Martinez (Bilbao, 1986), who, after showing titles including Sagarren denbora. 25 urte deserritik itzultzen (2010) and Paperezko hegoak (Paper Wings, 2021), returns to the section twofold: Bizkarsoro contains five true stories taking place in an imaginary town, while Mirande, film baterako zirriborroa, the Zinemira closing film, approaches the life and work of the writer Jon Mirande.
Competing for the Irizar Basque Film Award alongside the above-mentioned three titles are another two films included in other sections: the animated film El sueño de la sultana / Sultana’s Dream, feature debut from Isabel Herguera (Donostia, 1961) programmed in the Official Selection, and Arnasa betean, emakume zinegileak / A Deep Breath, Women Filmmakers, by Bertha Gaztelumendi (Irun, 1962) and Rosa Zufía (Tudela, 1958). In this film, programmed for Tuesday 26 September in the Victoria Eugenia Theatre as part of the Basque Cinema Gala, the two directors bring an immersion in cinema by Basque women.

But he is still a taboo subject. De Mirande is said to have been a racist. A paedophile. Nazi. Misogynist. Immoral. Every time his name is mentioned, fiery controversies break out. We don’t know what to do with him. I want to make a film about Mirande. But I don’t know how. Perhaps it would be more interesting to give him the floor ». (Josu Martinez)

Police control and the closure of certain crossings on the Bidasoa river, natural border of the Pyrenées-Atlantiques Department, imposed by France in summer 2018 to prevent the entrance of immigrants on their way to other European countries, caused 10 deaths in a single year. Seven people died from April 2021, drowned in the waters of the River Bidasoa between Irun and Hendaia, while another three lost their lives in October 2021, hit by a train in Ziburu. This documentary, as well as putting a voice and face to several of the activists who work on either side of the river, as representatives of the Harrera Sarea (Reception Network) and Bidasoa Etorkinekin (The Bidasoa with Migrants) associations, also recalls those who lost their lives, giving them a name and an age, following their journey and their dreams, discovering the history and the people behind the cold figures of the deceased, giving the tragedy a more human aspect.

In a non-existent town, five true stories based on oral testimonials and texts by writers take place between 1914 and 1982. Through them, we see the social changes experienced throughout the 20th century by a small town in the Northern Basque Country, the deep-rootedness and approximation of a language, and the struggle for survival.

We celebrate it with this documentary on the Basque women moviemakers of yesterday and today, giving a global overview of the subject. Three female divers guide us through the topic of their films, their points of view, their dreams, their efforts to get somewhere, their contribution to the cinema and to society. We discover the female pioneers, and are surprised by the work of older women filmmakers or of the younger ones who are now enjoying success at festivals.

Europarako migrazioek sortzen dituzten gatazka eta tragedietan jarri du begia Fermin Muguruza musikagile eta zinemagileak Donostiako Zinemaldian aurkeztuko duen proiektu berrian: ‘Bidasoa 2018-2023’. Aurrerapen gisa, sarean jadanik ikusgai dago trailerra eta haren bidez irudika daiteke irundarraren asmoa: errealitate gordin honi izen abizenak jarri dizkie, alderdi gizatiarra lehen planora eramanez.
Dokumental formatuan, Bidasoa ibaiaren bi ertzeetarako bisita sakona proposatuko dio ikusleari, bizimodu hobe baten bila muga zeharkatu beste aukerarik ez duten etorkinak bertatik bertara ezagutu eta horien eskubideen alde lanean ari direnen ikuspegiari oihartzuna emanez.
Filmaren sinopsiak gogora ekartzen duen bezala, 2018ako udan Estatu frantsesak Bidasoako muga naturalaren pasagune batzuen kontrola eta itxiera ezarri zuen, gisa horretan Europako gainontzeko herrialdeetara iritsi nahi zuten etorkinen sarrera eragoziko zuelakoan. Muguruzak gaztigatzen duenez, erabakiak hamar hildako eragin zituen urtebetean: 2021eko apiriletik, Irun eta Hendaia arteko Bidasoa ibaiko urtean itota zazpi pertsona hil ziren eta beste hiruk bizia galdu zuten urte bereko urrian, Ziburun tren batek harrapatuta.

‘Bidasoa 2018-2023’ ez da musikagile eta zinemagile irundarrak Zinemaldian aurkezten duen lehen lana. Aurretik ‘Zuloak’ (2012), ‘Nola?’ (2016), ‘Black is Beltza’ (2018) eta ‘Black is Beltza II: Ainhoa’ (2022) aurkeztuak ditu jaialdi donostiarrean, guztiak arrakasta nabarmenaz.
Fermin Muguruza Ugarte (1963, Irún). Foi definido como umha das figuras mais influintes e carismáticas do panorama musical basco. Dizer Fermin é dizer Kortatu, Negu Gorriak ou os múltiples projetos que o polifacético artista euskaldum leva avante.

The Bogotá International Independent Film Fair (FECI) will be held from June 9th to 14th. The Cinema Punk section will feature a selection of six films, including Fermin Muguruza´s ´Black is Beltza II: Ainhoa´.
This year, FECI Bogotá hosts the sixth edition of Cinema Punk, aiming to be a meeting point between audiovisuals and music. The main guest this year is Fermin Muguruza, singer of the Basque bands Kortatu and Negu Gorriak. Muguruza will present the film ´Black is Beltza II: Ainhoa´ on June 9th at 7:00pm (GMT – 5) in the Capital room at the Bogotça Cinemateca with support from the Etxepare Basque Institute.
Set in the late 1980s, ‘Black is Beltza II´ tells the story of a young Cuban girl called Ainhoa. Besides her Caribbean mother, Ainhoa has a Basque father (Manex, the protagonist of the first film). To discover her origins, Ainhoa travels to the Basque Country, with plans to go to Beirut as well to visit her ´stepmother´. This film explores the dynamics of the Basque nationalism independence movement of the 1980s, the popular movements in the Middle East, and the intersection with the dirty war involving drug trafficking, all unfolding against the backdrop of the imminent collapse of the Soviet Union.
Cinema Punk was created by FECI in 2017 to highlight feature films that fall somewhere between fiction and documentary. The programmed films delve into the subject of punk from a highly critical, socially conscious, and rebellious perspective, both in terms of their content and artistic expression.

FECIn (Feria Internacional de Cine Independiente de Bogotá) egitasmoaren baitako Cinema Punk sailaren seigarren edizioa izango da aurtengoa. Sailak ikus-entzunezkoen eta musikaren arteko topagunea izateko helburua du, eta filmen eduki eta formek punkaren gaia jorratzen dute, ikuspuntu kritikoenetik, sozialenetik eta kontestatarioenetik.
Bada, edizio honetan, Fermin Muguruza Kortatu eta Negu Gorriak taldeetako abeslaria izango da gonbidatu nagusia. Etxepare Euskal Institutuaren babespean, Muguruzak Black is Beltza II: Ainhoa (2022) filma bertatik beratara aurkezteko aukera izango du, ekainaren 9an, 19:00etatik aurrera, Bogotako Cinematecako Sala Capital aretoan.
‘Black Is Beltza II’ 80ko hamarkadaren amaieran girotuta dago eta kubatar jatorriko Ainhoa gaztearen urratsak jarraitzen ditu. Ainhoa mirariz jaio zen La Pazen (Bolivia) Amanda ama atentatu parapolizial batean eraila izan ondoren. Kuban hazi eta 1988an, 21 urterekin, Euskal Herrira abiatuko da Manex aitaren (lehen filmeko protagonistaren) lurraldea ezagutzera.
Gatazka errepresibo betean, Josune kazetari konprometitua eta bere lagun koadrila ezagutuko ditu. Horietako bat heroina gaindosi baten ondorioz hiltzen denean, Ainhoa eta Josune iniziazio-bidaian murgilduko dira Libano, Afganistan eta Marseilla hiritik barrena. Gerra Hotzaren azken urteak dira eta biak ala biak narkotrafikoko sareek trama politikoekin elkartzen diren mundu ilunean barneratuko dira.
Del 9 al 14 de junio, se presentará en Bogotá la muestra audiovisual Cinema Punk que en este 2023 celebra sus 6 años de existencia. Con un total de 6 películas que estarán circulando en las salas de la Cinemateca de Bogotá y de la Cinemateca del Tunal, FECIBogotá celebra por lo alto la existencia de esta franja de cine que ha venido ganando adeptos y seguidores a lo largo de estos años, tanto del público espectador como de los cineastas alrededor del mundo.
CINEMA PUNK es una franja de cine que hace parte de FECIBogotá y que nace en el año 2017 con el objetivo de programar una serie de largometrajes, entre ficción y documental, que abarcan es su contenido y en su forma, la temática punk vista desde su faceta más crítica, social y contestataria. Por esta razón para CINEMA PUNK es fundamental fortalecer los espacios de proyección con unas jornadas académicas para ir más allá de la sola apreciación de las bandas en vivo o de la música en general dentro del punk como género y con ello propiciar encuentros para la reflexión, en donde los asistentes se cuestionen así mismos el contenido de la música que están consumiendo y su postura frente a los acontecimientos sociales que nos afectan como comunidad.
En este 2023 CINEMA PUNK cumple 6 años y queremos celebrarlo con una muestra retrospectiva de las mejores películas que hemos proyectado desde nuestros inicios, además de estrenar en exclusiva para Colombia la película de animación Black is Beltza II: AINHOA del director, músico y activista Fermin Muguruza, muy reconocido en la escena musical por hacer parte de la agrupación KORTATU y NEGU GORRIAK, entre otre tras tantas conspiraciones musicales y audiovisuales.
También vamos a estrenar la película documental POLY STYRENE: I AM A CLICHÉ, que relata la vida y obra de una de las voces más creativas del punk británico: Poly Styrene, voz líder de la agrupación inglesa X-Ray Spex.
